The Influence of Instructional Rounds on Teacher Metacognition in a Middle School Context: A Mixed Methods Study

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The presentation will review a mixed-method research study that was conducted to gain a better understanding of the differential influence between traditional professional development (PD) and the alternative PD method of instructional rounds (IR) on teacher metacognitive development in the situated context of the middle school classroom.

The study included an intervention group that incorporated IR as an alternative PD method and a control group that did not use IR. The study examined the differences in the changes of the attitudes and beliefs in the two groups towards metacognition and associated teaching strategies by analyzing teacher reflective journaling, IR process self-documentation, and focus group discussions. The findings were supported by examining the differences in self assessed teacher metacognition scores among and within the two groups.
